Participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he was in his third year of high school. Won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Won the first gold medal in the history of the tournament as a Japanese swimmer in the World Swimming 200m Butterfly in 2015.
Won the bronze medal for the second consecutive tournament at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Announced retirement in October of the same year.
Currently, he is widely active as a Mizuno swim team coach, an athlete member of the Japan Swimming Federation, a part-time lecturer at Toyo University, a swimming class, and lectures.
